VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - Linda Fondren acknowledges that her background as a legal prostitute and brothel owner in Nevada could affect her candidacy for mayor of this riverfront gambling town. But she says she hopes her accomplishments since then will prevail with voters.

Some voters say Fondren's history is less important than what she can do for the city. Others say they're bothered by her initial denial of the brothel connection as reported in the Clarion Ledger.

Fondren counters that she and her husband have a successful record of building business in Nevada, California and Mississippi.

Among the six candidates she faces in the Democratic primary on May 7 is incumbent Mayor Paul Winfield. He also has an issue to overcome: He has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of taking a $10,000 bribe.
