Jackson teacher investigated for punching student

JACKSON, Miss. (KNOE 8 News) - The Jackson school district is investigating a report that a middle school teacher punched an eighth-grade student before dragging the boy from the classroom.

Katrina McGill says that Chris Shepard, her son's teacher, put him in a choke hold before removing him from the room.

The school district says it's investigating the allegations, but declines further comment.

McGill says the incident happened April 1, which was Shepard's first day at Whitten. Her son has been moved to another teacher's room, she says, but Shepard continues to work there.

Corporal punishment has been prohibited in the Jackson district since 1991, but the system has faced other allegations of teachers hitting students.

In 2010, then-Murrah High School boys basketball coach Marlon Dorsey whipped players with a weight belt.
