UPDATE THURSDAY 12:00 A.M.

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The West Monroe Walmart is no longer in any sings of danger after a suspicious package was found Wednesday night.

West Monroe police say a Walmart employee called to report a suspicious item near the Home and Pharmacy entrance around 7:40 P.M. Officers then evacuated the building.

Monroe police assisted West Monroe officers. Monroe's Bomb Disposal Unit was on the scene to detonate the suspicious bag. Investigators say after a brief x-ray of the item, they found clothing inside and other unknown items. Therefore, detectives say they needed to detonate the bag to ensure extra safety.

However, there was a slight issue during the first detonation process. Police attempted to use a water discharge to blow up the bag, but that failed. Police then moved the bag to a bomb proof box for detonation around 10:00 P.M. According to police, that was a successful attempt.

It's not yet known how the bag ended up inside the store. West Monroe police officers are reviewing surveillance video from Walmart.

No word on any potential charges.

Police say during this heightened time, be sure to keep your personal items with you at all times.
