Legislative fiscal analysts question Jindal budget

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Senators opened their budget hearings with questions raised about financing plans proposed by Gov. Bobby Jindal to balance next year's budget.

Members of the Senate Finance Committee heard Monday from analysts with the Legislative Fiscal Office about the 2013-14 budget proposal.

Fiscal office analysts say the governor's budget appears to overestimate the savings that will be generated by a new tax fraud initiative and might have underestimated how much money it will cost to operate the LSU hospitals under anticipated privatization deals.

They also say some of the funds that are slated to be transferred to public colleges under Jindal's plan don't currently contain the money expected to be transferred.

Jindal's commissioner of administration, Kristy Nichols, says she's confident the dollars used in the budget will be available for spending.
