Relay for Life starts 12-hour event at Revolution Park

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The fight against cancer is underway at Revolution Park as the Ouachita Parish Relay for Life gets underway.

The event started at 6pm Friday and will go until 6am Saturday. Relay for Life Chair, Maggie Acree, says the 12-hour event is full of family fun activities and information about cancer.

The fundraiser is to raise money and support for cancer research and awareness.

One volunteer, Aline Smead, has been with the Relay for Life for 12 years, and says she doesn't plan to stop the fight any time soon.

"The special part for me is at 10pm when the lights go down and the luminaries bags are lit and we can remember those we've lost."

It's not just a chance to honor those that lost their battle to cancer, but also to celebrate those that are still here.

"When the lights go down, we are near my bag and the rest of my family bags," says Smead, "and we just take a moment to reflect what we would have lost if I wouldn't have won the fight."

Smead is a 19-year cancer survivor, and celebrates life each day. She is now using her experience with battling cancer to help others in their fight.
