Hakkens arrested in Cuba, booked into Florida Jail

TAMPA, Fl. (KNOE 8 News) - The U.S. State Department and Florida Police officials have announced that Joshua and Sharyn Hakken are back in the United States and are booked into the Hillsborough County, Florida jail.

The two were wanted in connection with the kidnapping of their two sons.

U.S. State Department officials were tipped off on Sunday that the family was in Cuba, and that the Cuban government was willing to allow U.S. officials to take them into custody.

Louisiana State Police had issued a statewide alert for the family because of connections the Hakkens had in Slidell.

Authorities say both parents are facing kidnapping, interference with child custody, and neglect charges.

FBI Special Agent David Couvertier also said they treated this kidnapping as a "hostage situation" and did not consider it "typical."

The grandparents of the children, who have legal custody, are excited to have them home.
