Candlelight vigil planned for fallen Mississippi officer

JACKSON, Ms., (KNOE 8 News) - A candlelight vigil is being planned in Jackson this Thursday for Det. Eric Smith.

The vigil will be held outside the Jackson Police Department, where the detective was fatally shot last week.

Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. says the vigil will begin at 6 p.m on Thursday.

Smith was reportedly killed by a suspect he was questioning in a murder investigation.

According to police, Jeremy Powell took Smith's gun in a room on the department's third floor and also fatally shot himself.

A criminal investigation is being conducted by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations.

Johnson says a police department internal investigation will determine if there were any policy or procedural violations.

Johnson says a news conference will be called early next week and officials will answer questions about the shooting.
