Jackson interrogation room shooting deaths still a mystery

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Ms, (KNOE 8 News) - Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said she would perform autopsies today on the bodies of a police detective and a murder suspect who died in a shooting last night at Jackson police headquarters.

Detective Eric Smith and suspect Jeremy Powell died in an interrogation room being used after Powell's arrest.

Investigators were working to determine what set off the shooting. Jackson police offered few details of the incident and said the investigation would be handled by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

Smith had been on the police force since 1995. Powell had been arrested in connection with the stabbing death earlier this week of a 20-year-old Jackson man.
