Louisiana voters go to polls Saturday

MONROE, la. (KNOE 8 News)- Louisiana voters head to the polls Saturday in 38 parishes and communities. 

In Ouachita Parish the renewal of a point 7-5 mil property tax for parish health units and animal control is on the ballot.  The ten year proposition would raise about $700,000 per year.

Ouachita Parish voters in district one will also consider the renewal of a 5-mil property tax to provide funds for road lighting for a ten year period.

In the Ouachita Parish community of Sterlington, a half-percent sales tax is under consideration. The measure will raise about $130,000 a year for roads, drainage, water and sewer work.  

In Morehouse Parish, Bastrop residents will elect a mayor. Among the seven candidates is  democrat incumbent Betty Alford-Olive. Provided one candidate does not receive 51% of the vote, this race will be decided in a run-off election. Two democratic candidates are also vying for an alderman's seat in Bastrop. 

Also in Morehouse Parish, the village of Mer Rouge is asking voters to approve a 2% tax. The ten year tax would raise $250,000 annually for police protection.

In Catahoula Parish a five-mil measure is on the ballot to fund the Maitland Recreational District.

In LaSalle Parish voters are considering two school funding propositions for renovations and operation. Also on the ballot, are proposals for road repairs and road maintenance equipment, as well as proposals to fund a fire district and various recreational areas.

And in Winn Parish, voters will consider a 1% sales tax for trash removal equipment, as well as maintenance of the courthouse and public roads. The ten year proposition would raise $1.7 million yearly and replace and existing 1% tax.
