KELLY, La. (KNOE 8 News) - John Preston is keeping a close eye on all of his animals after the shooting death of three pigs over the weekend in Kelly, just south of Columbia in Caldwell Parish.

"Why harm an innocent animal? I mean, it's an animal. It can't defend itself. It's totally helpless," Preston said.

The helpless hogs were found dead in a gated area on the property. Two were shot in the head, the other took a bullet on its side.

"I believe it's a racist thing. I believe those individuals who have done it feel like this property was given to me," Preston said.

Preston is leaning on the sheriff's office to uncover the person behind the crime. Deputies are still calling possible suspects and asking questions.

The property owner also told law enforcement of other racial remarks geared toward him.

"One of the words that I heard was 'that black "n",he's going to be next'," Preston said.

The granddaughter of Preston comes out with him to his property sometimes but now that three of his pigs have been shot and killed, safety is an even bigger concern.

"I definitely do not want to be caught down here without a weapon, you know, something to protect myself," Preston said. "You know, I'm not going to do anything outrageous but I definitely want to have some means to protect myself and my family."

Hundreds of animals have been stolen, according to Preston. He now keeps many of his horses, pigs, and donkeys farther away, hoping they'll be safe from harm.

Preston lost Hundreds of dollars over the weekend after the animals were shot. He usually sells each pig for about $75.
