MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Ouachita Parish School Board voted this week to adopt a new teacher compensation plan but only under certain conditions. Incoming teachers with advanced degrees will actually get less when they first start.
Last month, it was determined that parish teachers with advanced degrees hired for the 2013-14 school year and beyond will earn less initially under the district's new salary schedule than they would have earned under the existing salary schedule.
The district's Director of Business Juanita Duke says the change is part of a plan for teacher compensation that will bring the district into compliance with new state laws governing salaries.
However, board attorney, Elmer Noah, said that because the constitutionality of Act 1 of the certified teacher compensation plan for 2013-2014 is being considered by the state Supreme Court, the board should approve the plan, pending the outcome of those considerations.
