Charges upgraded in death of 2-year-old

GRETNA, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office investigators have upgraded the charges against a Marrero man accused of fracturing the skull of his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter to murder.

Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the department, says 23-year-old Cyril Jones was booked Thursday night with second-degree murder shortly after toddler Darionne Taylor died from her injuries.

Fortunato says Darionne was hospitalized March 15 after she lost consciousness and began having seizures in the Marrero home she shared with her mother and Jones.

Fortunato says Jones initially told investigators Darionne fell off a bed and hit her head while he was babysitting the girl and three other nieces and nephews. But doctors told investigators her wounds weren't consistent with a fall.
