Delhi, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Northeast Louisiana Economic Alliance (NELEA) held its Annual Meeting on Wednesday, March 20 at the Delhi Civic Center, Delhi, Louisiana. NELEA hosted economic development partners and business persons from all of the 10 parishes the organization represents: Union, Ouachita, Caldwell, Morehouse, West Carroll, East Carroll, Tensas, Madison, Richland, and Franklin Parishes.
Guest speaker Louisiana Economic Development (LED) Secretary Stephen Moret stated Northeast Louisiana is positioned to be the beneficiary of the state's aggressive marketing efforts. The new strong business standing Louisiana has in relation to other states and the existing developed sites, including Franklin Farm and others give us a stronger competitive edge. Though there have been no new assembly plants built in the U.S. in the last 5 years, that industry is ramping up and LED is targeting that industry among others for strong job creation in NE Louisiana. Secretary Moret referenced Governor Jindal's tax reform program and alluded to new opportunities for new jobs as Louisiana becomes even more business oriented.
Scott Dreckard, an economist with the Tax Foundation in Washington DC, a non-profit organization that does tax analysis and comparisons for Federal, State and local governments spoke about Louisiana's current competitive position versus the competitive position Louisiana would assume under the proposed tax changes. According to the Tax Foundation, under the proposed Tax Reform, Louisiana would leap forward in the competition for large-job projects and business expansions. Their website http://www.taxfoundation.org/ has comprehensive analysis of tax issues and comparisons of state by state tax programs. Mr. Dreckard stated Louisiana would be extremely competitive under the proposed tax reform, and number one in the nation in many respects.
NELEA declared March 20, 2013 Senator Francis Thompson Day for his extraordinary support of regional economic development and his continuing support for policy, funding and marketing of the Region. Without his efforts, NE Louisiana would not have the excellent economic development effort on behalf of Ouachita Parish and the rural parishes that make up the region. His untiring efforts have helped to bring industry and valuable regional assets for economic development growth
