MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - How safe is your child's school? That's the question on many parent's minds following a rash of school shootings, and why many schools are taking extra precautions.
A lock down drill in February at Carroll High School had parents calling 911 believing it was real because it came with no warning. Wednesday officials went out of the way to make sure everyone was in the know.
Wossman High School Principal, Sam Moore, says "we use color codes, to indicate to our teachers the significance of what is going on." From the security cameras in the hall, we watched as Monroe Police Officers and school officials made sure everything was secure.
Monroe Police P.I.O. Mark Johnson says, "the school staff reacted appropriately. Monroe Police were here to assist. We want to commend them first for being proactive to take these initiative."
School officials checked all classroom doors to make sure they were locked, and office staff went into their safe hiding spot. Moore says, "we notified the proper authorities. We have to lean for them for guidance, to make sure we do everything the correct way."
Johnson says, "a little bit of warning, a little bit of notification didn't take away from this drill. The teachers are still going to react the same way, the kids are still going to act the same way."
Moore says they hold drills like this so parents know their children are safe. He says, "when they intrust students to Wossman High School, they know we are doing everything possible, to protect them." Moore says they hold numerous drills because practice makes perfect. Monroe Police gave Wossman a few tips after today's drill that will help them in case of a true emergency.
