MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Here are some of the stories happening in the ArkLaMiss this morning.

HARVEY, La. - Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies say a man was killed by gunfire in Harvey. Deputies say 19-year-old Byron Jones was found lying in the front yard of his apartment last night.

WEST MONROE, La. - Deputies say a 22 year-old West Monroe man was booked at Ouachita Correctional Center after being arrested on several charges, including burning his 3-year-old child with a space heater. Authorities say Vincent Tyler Frost is accused of throwing a woman on a bed and choking her while her children watched.

JENNINGS, La. - Police say a 44-year-old Jennings man was arrested after a crawfish farmer caught him stealing crawfish from his pond. James Darrel Dubroc is charged with trespassing and theft of crawfish by the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Office.

LAFAYETTE, La. - Acadian Middle School could become the third Lafayette Parish school in five years to undergo a reconstitution. A reconstitution allows principals and school administrators to revamp the faculty and staff and implement new techniques to help raise academic scores.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A Senate panel will review whether lawmakers properly approved legislation that requires Arkansas voters to show a photo ID before casting a ballot. The Senate Rules, Resolutions and Memorials Committee meets today to discuss complaints that the bill needs a two-thirds majority to be approved. The Senate delayed voting on the bill yesterday because of the complaints.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has scheduled a lecture on seeking a treatment for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Columbia University associate professor Hynek Wichterle will give the lecture today at noon. The talk will focus on trying to devise a treatment for the disease through research on human adult stem cells.

JONESBORO, Ark. - Vince Gill and Larry Gatlin are among the headliners for this year's Johnny Cash Music Festival in Jonesboro. The event is scheduled for August 17th at the Convocation Center at Arkansas State University. The festival will also feature the Gatlin Brothers, Jimmy Fortune and Joanne Cash Yates.

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - California authorities say a homeless married couple has been found dead in a trash receptacle. Police say 52-year-old Diana James and 53-year-old Roger James appear to homicide victims, but the coroner has yet to make a ruling. The couple is originally from Arkansas, were most of their relatives still reside.

JACKSON, Miss. - Seventeen counties are reporting damage the severe storm that produced large hail in the Jackson, Miss., metropolitan area and high winds to areas of north Mississippi.  Jackson and its suburbs were hit yesterday by hail that busted windows in cars, homes and businesses and temporarily left a blanket of ice on some parking lots and sidewalks.

VANCLEAVE, Miss. - Jackson County school board members approved a $7,000 program that will provide an anonymous tip line for students to report bullying or threats at school. The Talk About It program will be implemented in all the district's middle schools and at St. Martin High School on a trial basis.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Hattiesburg City Council is considering an amendment to its alcohol ordinances. The proposal calls for allowing consumption and sale of alcohol on downtown streets which are closed for city-sponsored events. The council will vote on the measure at today's meeting.

GAUTIER, Miss. - The city of Gautier could limit the number of domesticated animals per residence at today's council meeting. The city manager says an ordinance on the agenda stems from complaints from residents.
