MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A fire sparked around 1 p.m. at the Windsor Inn where 24 apartments were destroyed leave more than fifty without a place to live.  Many of those people stood earlier watching the building burn, like Delilah Clemeth.

It began as a regular day for Delilah, she was getting ready to go shopping when a sharp knock on her door changed everything. She said she opened the door to her boyfriend, who told her the building was on fire.

"It's really frightening, just really frightening," she said.

With the smoke burning their throats, they both ran out of the building to find the sky filled with smoke. "Everything was just totally white [with smoke]. It came from one side and came from the other side," she said.

Many of Delilah's neighbors lost everything. Left to just stand helplessly watching the building and their belongings burn. "My heart goes out to the people who lost their stuff and hope and pray they get back up on their feet.

Delilah isn't sure how damaged her apartment is and is overwhelmed with emotions. Knowing she'll likely have to pick up, start over and find a new place to call home."It's just devastating," she said.

The Red Cross has been called in to help those without a place to sleep tonight.
