New child welfare initiative to be announced

MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - The Department of Children and Family Services is announcing a new child welfare initiative Wednesday the 13th in Monroe.

The new initiative, called "Faith in Families" will focus on the number of children and amount of time in care, and the family connections available to children when they exit foster care.

The formal announcement of the new initiative will be held at the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home at 7200 Desiard Street in Monroe, at11:30 Wednesday morning. DCFS Secretary Suzy Sonnier will be attending the announcement.

There are around 3,900 children in Louisiana's foster care program at any one time, cared for by more than 2,000 foster families and residential programs. More than 600 of these children are available for adoption. About 50 children in Louisiana become eligible for adoption each month. Nearly 200 children will age out of foster care in the next year.
