MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - District 8 leaders of the Council on Aging are meeting to discuss their budget woes.
"What we maybe have needed is a champion for the cause," says Ouachita COA Director, Lynda McGeehee, "a legislator that will stand up and say hey lets do something about this."
Next's years potential state budget calls for the elimination of supplemental funds. If approved, senior centers across the state will feel the effects, like Richwood's SCORE Center that could face shut down.
The COA has been fighting these same budget cuts for years and they've become pros at editing their budget. Budget cuts have already forced the COA to cut some recipients from their Meals on Wheels program. The organization is also having to serve more senior citizens as baby-boomers come of age, yet the budget continues to shrink.
"When the population your serving is growing and your budget is going in the opposite direction, what are we supposed to do," says McGehee.
McGehee says she will continue to fight for senior citizens, but that she's ready for the state to realize the importance of the COA.
Ouachita Council on Aging's Shindig, it's biggest fundraiser, is set for Friday, March 22, from 7pm - midnight. For tickets call (318) 387-0535.
