Herbicide treatment at Salin Lake to begin

Posted: Updated:

JONESVILLE, La.  (KNOE 8 News) - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will begin spraying an herbicide on Saline Lake today, Monday, March 11th.

The lake is located in Catahoula Parish.  The department will also use salvinia weevils and lake draw downs to control the fast growing invasive fern.

They'll spray about 1,000 acres of the lake.

Last year, more than half the lake was covered with giant salvinia, which can form mats anywhere from inches to several feet deep.

Water was drawn down during the fall and winter to strand and kill salvinia. That cut salvinia coverage by over 50 percent. A second draw down is scheduled this fall.
