Police say stories of gun at West Ridge Middle was RUMOR

WEST MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - A report of a gun on campus at West Ridge Middle school in West Monroe this week was just a rumor according to the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office.

This is the text of the report from the Sheriff's office:

"...the Ouachita Sheriff's Office received a complaint from a parent of a student at West Ridge Middle School concerning a rumor about a student who was supposed to be bringing a gun to school to shoot students who were on some kind of list.

Shortly thereafter, the rumors appeared on Facebook, which started a frenzy of posts and calls to OPSO from concerned parents.

Upon receiving this information, OPSO deputies contacted the principal and learned that the matter had already been addressed in the school during the day by their administrators and counselors and determined to be only rumors with no validity to the allegations.

However, due to the nature of the rumors, OPSO conducted its own investigations into the matter and also found no evidence of any list or potential threat to any students from the alleged person.

It was only after the students went home advising their parents of these rumors and posting on Facebook that OPSO was notified of the matter and requested to investigate. For the sake of the concerns of the community, deputies were posted at the school the next day (3-4-13) through out the day.

As of this time OPSO has no reason to believe that any threat exists at West Ridge Middle School or any other school in Ouachita Parish that we are aware of. OPSO stands firm on the security of the children in our schools and will investigate any complaint that might be deemed as a threat to the safety of the students and faculty of our school system.
