MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A loaded gun brought into the Madison James Foster Elementary School leaves an 8 year old boy expelled.
The school received a tip the boy had a gun, and when confronted the boy admitted to bringing it. The gun was a loaded .22-caliber pistol that was in the 8 year old's back pack.
Monroe Police Department, Sargent Mark Johnson, says "it was never produced from the back pack. It was never an immediate threat to anyone at the school or faculty." Johnson says, "a rumor, something that's being investigated, is the child brought it to school to trade for a video game."
A source close to the school told us they've had children bring a loaded air gun and toy gun to school; and threaten faculty before. Madison James Foster Elementary School Principal, Marquette Marshall, says "people brought different things. We handled those according to the policy of the Monroe City Schools."
Many parents have walked into office Monday wondering why they haven't been notified of the situation.
Parent, Lawanda Smith, says "we didn't know we had to hear by phone calls, about what happened to the school today. I was just worried about my kids." Another Parent, Quintara Norman, says "they wont even notify us. When we call they won't answer the phone or anything I'm just scared. I don't think that was right."
Marshall says they plan to send a note home with the children to explain what happened. He says, "we've had parent's calling all day. We've been giving explanations that the situation was handled in a very expeditious manner."
Even though the situation was handled quickly, parent's say they are still worried about their child's safety. Monroe Police took the child into custody, but he was released to his parents. Because of his age, the boy cannot be charged. We asked if the boy's parents could face charges in this case. We were told the incident is under investigation; and a report will be forwarded to the district attorney's office.
