MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - An 8 year old boy brought a loaded hand gun to Madison James Foster Elementary school today.
School officials received a tip the child had the gun at school. When confronted the boy told school officials he had a .22-caliber pistol in his backpack. The gun was loaded. Monroe Police Department Sgt. Mark Johnson says the boy was expelled from school and taken into police custody.
Johnson says because the child is too young to be arrested, he was released into his parents' custody. Johnson said the police are still investigating the incident and a report will be written and forwarded to the 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office.
Johnson commends the school for their quick response, and for resolving the issue. Johnson says the gun never left the child's backpack.
