Millions of dollars unclaimed in the Bayou State

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - More than $200 million  in unclaimed money is waiting for Louisiana taxpayers.

Insurance Commissioner James Donelon says this all stems from a surplus in funds after Hurricane Katrina.

According to Donelon federal dollars and extra insurance money is bringing good news to property owners and renters.

Several years ago lawmakers decided to offer tax credits. State leaders say you may be owned thousands of dollars.

"Folks who are not aware of the availability of this tax credit or rebate can go back on each property that they own and have insured four years and recoup that money, in many cases it can be thousands of dollars," Donelon said.

The insurance commissioner says there are three ways to find out if you are owed any money. First you can ask your tax preparer. Or you can log onto the state's insurance website: click here. Donelon says you can also calling his office at 1 (800) 259-5300.
