LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas lawmakers have given final approval to a proposal that would give arrest and detention powers to campus police at private colleges and universities.
By a 29-3 vote, the Senate approved a bill that would allow private campuses to maintain a law enforcement agency with arrest and detention powers. The House approved the bill last week and it now heads to Gov. Mike Beebe's desk.
Supporters of the measure say giving private campuses the ability to create police agencies would help them better protect their students. There are 11 private colleges and universities in the state.
Lawmakers opposed to the bill said they worried about the precedent of giving police powers to private entities.
