MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Louisiana Delta Community College will begin its first class under the "new" North Delta Regional Training Academy on Monday, February 25th.
Last year, the North Delta Law Enforcement Planning District voted to have Delta assume operations of the academy, pending approval of the Louisiana POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) Council. The District will serve as the Advisory Committee for the academy in order to assure programming and operations comply with needs of law enforcement agencies within the region.
"We are very proud to have our association with the North Delta Law Enforcement Planning District and the agencies they represent. The academy is a true partnership of our organizations with the purposes of providing quality law enforcement training in the region. We could not have been able to operate the academy without this partnership," explains Dr. Barbara Hanson, Chancellor at Louisiana Delta Community College.
POST authorized Delta to operate the academy on Wednesday of this week. Delta is the only community college in Louisiana that will be operating a police academy. "We see the academy as just a beginning in law enforcement training at Delta. Working in partnership with the planning district we see additional certifications being developed in the future," says Hanson.
The Academy Director will be Delta instructor Lum Farr. Farr has served as a law enforcement officer and has operated police academies in Texas. He holds a Masters of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisiana-Monroe. He also holds a Masters Peace Officer Certification. He brings more than 33 years of law enforcement and law enforcement education to the academy.
Other instructors at the academy will be POST certified peace officers from area law enforcement agencies, as well as the Louisiana Attorney General's Office, the Fourth Judicial District Attorney's office, the Louisiana State Police, and other professionals.
"We are excited with beginning the academy. Coupled with our Forensics degree program that will begin this fall, in-service training we have been providing for nearly a year and a half, and other initiatives we are planning, we believe we will have one of the most comprehensive law enforcement educational facilities in the state," expresses Bob Hammack, Workforce Development Director for Delta.
Hanson adds, "We appreciate the guidance and support of POST in developing the academy. They really went the extra mile in helping us."
