Landrieu to continue as chair of Senate subcommittee

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON, D.C., (KNOE 8 News) - U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu will continue as chair of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee. This subcommittee is responsible for the funding and oversight of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its sub-agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It also oversees the budget for the Coast Guard.

In addition, Sen. Landrieu will serve on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, which provides oversight and funding for the Department of Defense to ensure we meet our security and defense needs, including the necessary training to ensure our troops are battle ready. She will also serve on the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee.

"During the last two years, my subcommittee and the Department of Homeland Security have made significant progress, including improving federal disaster funding and response, supporting the Coast Guard and strengthening our border security. I am proud of the work we have done, but we must remain focused on protecting our nation from foreign, domestic and cyber threats. I am also focused on making our air travel system as convenient and efficient as possible, while maintaining the highest level of security," Sen. Landrieu said. "It is the job of DHS to protect our citizens from any threat, whether it comes by air, land, sea or over the Internet. This subcommittee will continue to provide the necessary oversight and funding to ensure this mission is achieved."

As chair of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, Sen. Landrieu lists the following activities:

Held 10 subcommittee hearings on issues ranging from disaster response and recovery to Coast Guard operations, including a field hearing in Gretna, La., on disaster response and rebuilding from Hurricane Isaac.

Led the effort in Congress to provide a swift and strong federal response to Hurricane Sandy. She also successfully included important reforms to federal policies on disaster recovery based on lessons learned after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita that will make Hurricane Isaac rebuilding efforts more effective.

Examined ways to improve the flying experience for travelers, as well as to expedite the issuance of visas to promote tourism and business from high-demand countries.

Worked to replace the aging Coast Guard fleet with six Fast Response Cutters built in Louisiana.

Secured $5 million to strengthen seafood and tariff enforcement. These funds will allow the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to create an antidumping and trade enforcement initiative, which aims to improve duty collections, stop duplicitous importers and improve communication with the Commerce Department.

Led the effort to strengthen Jones Act enforcement to defend our U.S. maritime industry. This includes a provision in her fiscal year 2013 Department of Homeland Security funding bill that would prohibit waivers of the Jones Act from transporting releases of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve until the Secretary, after consultation with the Secretaries of the Departments of Energy and Transportation and representatives from the U.S. flag maritime industry, takes adequate measures to ensure the use of U.S. flag vessels.

Held a hearing in Alaska focusing on the need for a robust Coast Guard presence in Alaska as the nation pursues expanding navigation, tourism and fishing opportunities in the Arctic region.
