Notheast Louisiana Career Fair

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Five hundred people filled the Monroe Civic Center Wednesday with one thing in common, they're all looking for work.

The career fair means more than just hunting a job for mom of four, Tegan Boykins.

She says, "something long term to support my family. Something with excellent benefits to support a large family."

Boykins and her husband came to the career fair together. She was laid off, and he relies on seasonal work when he can get it. Both need jobs and benefits.

Antron Causey says, "if you don't have any benefits, you need cash money on hand if you're kids get sick. Anything could happen, you might have to have heart surgery or any kind of surgery. So if you don't have a job with benefits, it's not really good."

They made a list of employers they wanted to see and traveled from room to room. They received business cards and handed out resumes. Boykins says, "I visited a couple of booths that I was really interested in. I heard some great things, and I dropped off some resumes."

This is the largest career fair in Northeast Louisiana. Organizers say this is the most employers they've ever had signed up.

President of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, Sue Nicholson says, "50 vendors this year. We think that is reflective of what may be happening in the economy. Employers are beginning to hire up again."

Boykins says the struggles of finding a job are real. She says, "I don't think you would ever understand it until you actually go through it."

Boykins and her husband say after leaving the career fair they have high hopes. She says, "I'm feeling great." Causey says, "I felt like I was going to find something, and I believe I already have."

Employers told us they gathered a record number of applications from job seekers.
