WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The West Monroe Sports Complex has been under renovation for several months. Causing youth basketball teams to play and practice somewhere else, but it may be opened just in time for the adult basketball league.

From top to bottom the West Monroe Sports Complex is being renovated. It's even receiving a new name, The West Monroe Rec.

West Monroe's Mayor Dave Norris says "it's a very inexpensive place to exercise and to enjoy activities." The city run sports complex's remodeling price tag is around $700,000.

Rec manager Kip Davis says, "there hasn't been any updates to this building since the mid 1970's."

Davis says the floor looks a lot better, and it will be better for the athletes. He says, "their legs don't get as tried, and the next day they don't have that tiredness. It's a lot safer than a tile floor."

The floor isn't the only thing that is new. The rec has new ceilings, air conditioning unit, and security features to keep everyone safe. Davis says, "we have video cameras on our gym floor, and on our weight rooms just for safety factors."

There is also new bleachers, and even a cardio room for the first time. The locker rooms have received a big upgrade. Davis says the rec center is used by everyone from children to adults.

He says, "the people of West Monroe I think will really like what we've done. It's a nice upgrade from what we had."

They are also hoping to add pool tables and ping pong tables to the rec center. The cost of membership is going up from $10 to $20 a month. The rec center isn't just open to West Monroe residents, but anyone who wants to use it.
