Ouachita Parish leaders seeking cleaner neighborhoods

Posted: Updated:

OUACHITA PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A Ouachita Parish lawmaker is still hoping to toss out the current trash problem.

Police Juror Pat Moore is bringing a proposal, that raised eyebrows for some, back to the table. This time she's bringing some changes. First, only owners of residential rental properties in unincorporated Ouachita parish will be required to get garbage service. Another change is, there is no jail time, just fines and community service.

The proposal is scheduled to be introduced March 4, 2013.

"We listened, the jury listened to those who opposed, I went back to the drawing board and tried to see how I could come up with a revised ordinance which would still address the same thing that we were trying to accomplish," Police Juror Pat Moore said.

This week's Ouachita Parish Police Jury meeting is not Monday, it's now Tuesday. This is a result of President's Day. But this meeting will also tackle ways to make the parish look better, according to one police juror.

Parish leader Ollibeth Reddix is introducing a proposal calling to increase the penalties when it comes to the abandoned vehicles and for not taking care of your lawn, in unincorporated areas. Reddix believes the fines should increase.

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 5:30 in the evening at the parish courthouse.
