Animal Cruelty Protestors

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A group of protestors took up post at the local Wal-Mart, accusing them of animal cruelty.

Their goal is to inform shoppers about Wal-Mart pork suppliers' alleged practices of cruelly confining pigs in gestation crates.

They brought their representation of animal cruelty. A 10 foot tall inflatable pig, bloody with sores and locked in a narrow crate.

National Campaign Coordinator, Phil Letten, says "the reaction has been incredible we've gotten a lot of honks, a lot of thumbs up. I think it's because most people are opposed to animal abuse. When learn about the horrific abuse that pigs go through before they wind up on Wal-Mart's shelves; they're horrified and they don't want to support it."

In a statement, Wal-Mart says, "We hold our suppliers to the highest standards and do not tolerate animal mistreatment. We encourage customers interested in learning more about how grocers and restaurants source pork products to contact the national pork board."
