Tallulah mother reflects on son's organ donations

TALLULAH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Thursday wasn't just Valentines Day, it was also National Organ Donor Day and it's a day one Tallulah mother holds close to her heart.

Nearly two years ago, Ella Jackson received a phone call that changed her life forever. "Really it was a shock I wasn't expecting that. It was just a shock to hear that," she said she was told her son had been shot, but she didn't know the seriousness of the situation until she arrived at the hospital. "Seeing him in the hospital the way he was, was actually one of the worse things I've ever seen in my entire life," said Jackson.

Ella's 20 year old son, Marcus, was brain dead after being shot in the head and left to die on a  trail in Pittsburg, California. A homeless man found him and called for help, but by then it was too late. "I can't describe that much pain, its just a pain I have never endured in my entire life, it just hurts so much," said Jackson.

While struggling to come to terms with her son's situation, she was asked whether she wanted to donate Marcus' organs. After much prayer, she made the difficult decision to do it. Ultimately because of that decision, both of his kidneys, lungs, liver and heart saved the lives of six different people.

Now she see's her son as a real-life super hero. "You're saving someone else's life, you're being a hero to someone else somebody and that's what he is to someone," Each day is a struggle for Ella, but knowing lives were saved has brought comfort to her heart. Now she encourages everyone to become an organ donor, to possibly one day become a hero just like Marcus.

Studies show that 18 people will die each day waiting for an organ and just one organ donor can save up to 8 lives.
