Active Shooter Seminar in Ferriday

Posted: Updated:

FERRIDAY, La. (KNOE 8 News) - An emergency management crew from Warren County, Mississippi, is taking their training seminar on the road.

The team crossed the state line today to hold an "active shooter" seminar in Ferriday. Director John Elfer says he wanted to open up the forum to everyone because an emergency can happen anytime, anywhere.

Teachers, grandparents, students, and local police all attended the event to learn some basic steps to take if a shooter opens fire.

Bill Beasley is a Charter School board member, and went to the active shooter seminar to find out how to protect students.

"A new charter school will be opening up this fall, and I have a lot of interest in it," says Beasley, "to make sure we have a lot of security there for the kids."

Another in attendance, Yvonne Zimmerman, just wants to keep her family safe.

"I'm very concerned for the safety of my family, especially my grandchildren," says Zimmerman.

Since the Sandy Hook school shooting in December, police agencies and schools have increased security and training, but the public has few opportunities to learn what to do in an emergency situation.

"Anybody that goes to a mall, anybody that goes to a movie theater, a large sporting event, any place there are a lot of people there is the potential to become an active shooting situation," says Elfer.

John Elfer has decades of police and military experience, and now, working for Warren County Emergency Management he is spreading that knowledge.

"I'm learning how to be aware of things that may be going on around me," says Zimmerman, "and just try to be careful."

She says armed with the knowledge from the seminar, she can better protect her family.

Elfer says the same course is available for free at the FEMA website.
