JACKSON, Ms., (KNOE 8 News) - The Mississippi Senate has passed a bill designed to regulate drugs that are used to induce abortions.
But abortion opponents who sought the bill say they believe it was watered down. Terri Herring of Pro-Life America Network says she can't support the bill in its current form.
Senate Bill 2795 originally said physicians could only prescribe the abortion-inducing drugs mifepristone and misoprostol according to directions from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. They couldn't give off-label instructions different from those approved by the FDA.
The Mississippi State Medical Association said the original bill could've criminalized doctors for practicing medicine according to accepted standards of care.
On a split vote, senators made changes to address the medical association's concerns.
