JOHANNESBURG, S.A., (KNOE 8 News) - Paralympic Champion Oscar Pistorius has been arrested and charged with murder.
Pistorius, who's nickname is "Blade Runner", was the first double amputee sprinter ever to compete in the Olympics, but was charged this week in the shooting death of a cover girl model he knew. The shooting occurred at his home in Pretoria.
The development stunned a nation viewed the sprinter as heroic because of his ability to overcome adversity and then to represent South Africa on the world Olympic stage.
Confirming the charges, police officials said they planned to oppose Pistorius's expected application for bail at a court hearing scheduled for Friday. The police had initially said he would appear in court later today, the 15th.
The victim has been tentatively identified as Reeva Steenkamp, a model, cover girl, and law school graduate. The two of them had been seen together recently at a number of events and places.
Early today (Thursday, Feb. 15th) gunshots were reported at Pistorius' house. When police arrived, paramedics were already there working on the woman, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Pistorius won two gold medals and a silver at last year's Paralympic Games in London. In the 2012 Olympics, he reached the 400-meter semifinal and competed in the 4x400 meter relay.
Reportedly, Pistorius told police the shooting was an accident, but police have charged him with murder.
