Caddo jail not so crowded any more

Posted: Updated:

SHREVEPORT, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Caddo Correctional Center housed 1,045 inmates in January, the lowest monthly head count in five years.

This is a 28 percent drop from the 1,451 inmates behind bars at the facility in January 2008, when overcrowding was an issue.

Parish officials attribute the drop to changes - such as reports being submitted quicker and cases being processed faster - in the way law enforcement, the courts and the commission are handling business.

As a result, there are fewer delays and continuances being granted in the courts and fewer sentenced inmates being held at the jail.

Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator says sentences are not being shortened, but defendants are being released sooner because they are going to trial faster.
