Ouachita Parish School Safety

Posted: Updated:

OUACHITA PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - How safe is your child's school? That's the question on many parent's minds after the recent school shootings.

Security cameras and locked doors, are they enough to make you feel safe when sending your child to school?

Mom, Jaffalyn Gaddis, says "especially with all the recent school shootings that's going on, it makes me feel a lot safer."

Gaddis says the Ouachita Parish School System is doing more to keep her child safe; and that helps ease her mind when dropping her child off.

Before anyone is allowed to see or check out a child they must show their photo ID; then match a name on the check out authorization list.

Gaddis says, "if I have to go all the way back home to get my ID I will. If it's going to be for the safety of not just my child, but for all the children here."

The school system is also making sure all exterior doors of the school are locked.

Ouachita Parish Superintendent, Bob Webber, says "the plans are to be able to lock it shortly after 8:00; and make it where you are actually buzzed into the office or into the building after 8:00."

Some schools that are easy to reach the main hallways will be renovated, to add doors to stop people from coming in.

Ouachita Parish Junior High Principal, Marsha Baker, says "with the doors there they are locked you can exit them but you can't enter them."

They're also installing cameras in the schools that don't have them, and adding cameras to buildings that already have a few in place.

Baker says, "exterior availability we've never had cameras on the exterior, and I just think it's necessary."

Law enforcement will have blueprints for all of the Ouachita Parish Schools. That will give them insight before they ever have to enter an actual building.

In the next few weeks, law enforcement will be taking aerial photos of all the schools in the parish to keep on record for safety purposes.
