Ark. lawmaker changes his guns in college plan

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ar., (KNOE 8 News) - An Arkansas lawmaker says he's changing his proposal allowing faculty and staff to carry concealed handguns on public college campuses to give schools the option to opt out and prohibit the firearms.

Republican Rep. Charlie Collins of Fayetteville said Monday he's amending his proposal which would allow faculty and staff to carry concealed weapons at public universities and colleges. Collins said his amendment will allow the governing boards of the colleges and universities to opt out and ban the concealed weapons on specific campuses and buildings. The amendment would allow the schools to revisit the issue annually.

Collins' proposal already includes an opt-out provision for private colleges and universities.

Collins says he'll bring his bill before the House Education Committee this week.
