Recent breast cancer research by scientists at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine shows that low Vitamin D levels in the blood in the months preceding diagnosis, are often positively correlated with a higher risk of pre-menopausal breast cancer. While the mechanisms that support the findings are not completely understood at this time, the recent insights suggest that the association between breast cancer prevention and vitamin D is most high in the three months preceding the diagnosis of a tumor.

Vascular Health Sciences Chief Science Officer Nathalie Chevreau, PhD, R.D. weighed in on the news, praising the study, but asking for continued diligence.

“The research results provide a helpful light,” said Chevreau. “But, let's be clear that further research is essential in order to eliminate breast cancer without the use of prescription pharmaceuticals, which is critical."

During a previous analysis, several colleagues estimated that an increased blood serum level of vitamin D by 50 percent is associated with a 50 percent reduction in breast cancer. In addition, the study shows promise for a wide range of other cancers and most experts suggest that further research is required in order to find the root cause of breast cancer and not merely treat the symptoms.
