Term limits may be on the way for Monroe officials

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Term limits may be a key issue in one city during the next election.

The Monroe City Council is scheduled to vote on whether to have residents decide on term limits for the city's mayor and council members. An option on the agenda calls for only three consecutive terms.

The author of that proposal is Councilwoman Betty Blakes.

Also, Blakes is calling for the council to have their own legal representative, without having to use the current city attorney, Nanci Summersgill.

The vice chair of the council, Ray Armstrong is weighing in.

"The legislative and the administrative functions are separate. There's a balance of power in government and we intend to be separate. It was felt that it would be appropriate to have a separate representation," Armstrong said.

The city council is also scheduled to vote on whether to end having the mayor's approval on any appointments made by the council.

It's definitely a packed agenda. City leaders will meet this Tuesday at 6 in the evening at City Hall.
