Haynesville man gets life in prison

Posted: Updated:

ARCADIA, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A 21-year-old Haynesville man convicted in December in the shooting death of a Claiborne Parish police juror has been sentenced to life in prison.

District Judge Glenn Fallin imposed the mandatory sentence Thursday on Donte Fielding, who was convicted by a Bienville Parish jury of the second-degree murder of Butch Bays.

The trial was moved to the neighboring parish because of pre-trial publicity and the concern a fair jury could not be selected in Claiborne Parish.

Bays was killed on Dec. 16, 2010 in his store located in the community of Summerfield. Authorities said the 72-year-old was shot multiple times in the back. Robbery was the motive.

A second suspect, Hardy Taylor Jr., is scheduled for trial this year.
