GREENWOOD, Ms,. (KNOE 8 News) - A former Golden Age Nursing Home nurse charged with illegally obtaining painkillers from nursing home residents has pleaded guilty in Leflore County Circuit Court.

The attorney general's office says in a news release that Stephanie Ray Barton, 46, of Sidon, pleaded guilty on Jan. 30 to one count of obtaining a controlled substance by means of fraud or subterfuge. Initially, she faced seven counts of illegally obtaining drugs while on duty.

Circuit Judge Ashley Hines placed Barton in the local drug court. Barton will be required to undergo drug and alcohol rehabilitation and testing and participate in aftercare programs.

Barton was accused of stealing Lorcet, a prescription painkiller containing hydrocodone, by signing for the drug on patients' records and then keeping the medication for her own use.
