SLIDELL, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Police say a man suspected of robbing a Slidell bank at gunpoint shot himself in the head as St. Tammany Parish sheriff's deputies attempted to stop him in a nearby subdivision minutes after the robbery.

Sgt. Sean Beavers says witnesses told investigators the man walked into a branch of Gulf Coast Bank at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday wearing a hoodie, a mask and gloves.

Beavers says the man allegedly showed a handgun and walked away with an undisclosed amount of money.

As deputies attempted stop the suspect, Beavers says the suspect shot himself with a small caliber handgun.

The man's name and medical condition have not been released.
