Enhanced 911 system installed in East Carroll Parish

LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - East Carroll Parish is back on an enhanced 911 system after a year long hiatus after the previous sheriff disbanded the program.

For a year, the sheriffs department went back to the basics, meaning all 911 calls went through administrative phone lines and workers weren't able to distinguish which calls were emergency ones.

911 coordinator Debra Hopkins says, many East Carrollinians have widely supported re-instating the technology. "What it means for the parish is they are going to be safer, they are going to be better taken care of, they are going to have the care and safety that people in other parishes have," said Hopkins.

The new system has the ability to locate callers who may not be able to tell dispatchers where they are or what they need. Each time someone dials 911, their name pops up on the and in seconds, the system pinpoints exactly where the call is coming from.

Hopkins says the upgrade brings the call center up to 21st century standards. "We're proud of that because East Carroll isn't always on the top of the chain, of being on top but I think for 911 we are."

The enhanced system costs around $4,000.00 dollars a month.  It'll be partly financed through a millage tax, passed last year with a 75% approval vote. "It's a good investment for the parish, there's no doubt, you're going to be so much safer," said Hopkins.

It took the parish 7-months to get the enhanced system up and running again.
