Monroe unveils new emergency coordination center

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The public safety building on Highway 165 is now the home of the Monroe Emergency Coordination Center. It took about 60 days to build with a price tag of $30,000. Something Fire Chief Jimmy Bryant considers an economical investment by saying, "this is going to save the city money because it's going to eliminate redundancy. It's going to help the community because we're going to be able to respond the right equipment and personnel and in a timely manner.

This new center will bring all city agencies together during times of major incidents, be it a natural or man made disaster or crisis. It's all in hopes of eliminating one of the biggest issues experienced during times of emergencies.

"the single biggest thing that hinders us is the sharing of information." Said Chief Bryant.

Chief Bryant says, now they will be able to avoid that problem and quickly answer, what he calls, the three "whatcha's."

"Whatcha got, whatcha you doing, and what do you need?" He explained.

One topic he greatly emphasized is the Monroe Center will not compete with the Department of Homeland Security but instead work together with it.

"We are tasked with responding to those incidents that do not raise to the level of disaster declaration." He said.

Once a disaster declaration is put in place, the parish will activate its command center but the monroe center will still provide resources until the all clear is given.

Some of the technology featured in the new center is several projector screens displaying multiple data sources from weather radar to skype. They also display the location of police and fire units and how long that unit has been there.
