Mississippi legislature working to allow prayer in schools

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Ms. (KNOE 8 News) - Mississippi lawmakers are working on a new measure that would make it legal for students to pray before public school groups.

The bill was approved unanimously Monday in the House education committee. The bill bans teachers from penalizing students for expressing religious view in schoolwork.

Students would be allowed to organize prayer groups and religious clubs on school campuses, and would give outside religious groups the ability to use school facilities.

The bill goes to the house for more debate.
