WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The West Monroe Chamber of Commerce sponsored a state of the city luncheon Thursday. City leaders say the lunch's main purpose was to inform the community, how their tax dollars are being used.
Mayor Dave Norris gave updates on West Monroe projects and the city's plans for the year. The mayor says the opening of the waste water recycling plant, was one of last year's biggest accomplishments. As for this year, Norris says the city will see the 7th street recreation center reopen. Several public works projects are also in the works.
"We had a good year financially, we were able to have a good balanced budget and a small budget surplus, so that's always good, this has been a challenging time since the national economy has gone down, with the recovery things are looking better for us," said Norris.
Chamber leaders say they want the state of the city address to be an annual event. "Many people are interested in the many projects and the goals and objectives of the city." said Chamber President Courtney Hornsby. "It was just a wonderful learning opportunity so our local community leaders can understand what's happening here and ways they can be involved," she added.
