Arkansas trying to deal with Charter School issues

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ar., (KNOE 8 News) - Arkansas' top schools official and a coalition of education advocates are urging Arkansas lawmakers to reject legislation that would create an independent state commission to consider charter school applications.

State Education Commissioner Tom Kimbrell and education groups on Wednesday announced their opposition to a bill pending before a House committee that would take away the Board of Education's authority to approve charter school applications. The bill would create a new panel appointed by the governor and legislative leaders to consider the applications.

Gov. Mike Beebe also opposes the legislation. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush headlined a rally at the Capitol Tuesday in favor of the measure.

The groups at Wednesday's announcement included the Arkansas School Boards Association, the Arkansas Education Association and the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators.
