Cyber News, Theater sets aside "Tweet" seats

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (KNOE 8 News & AP) - The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission.

It was to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide. Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch, was taken over early Saturday. It was replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

IN THE NEWS: PROVIDENCE THEATER EXPERIMENTS WITH 'TWEET SEATS'

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - You don't have to turn your smartphone off at the Providence Performing Arts Center - at least not if you're sitting in the "tweet seats."

The Rhode Island theater is now setting aside a small number of seats for those who promise to live-tweet the performance. Twitter users might offer impressions of the set, music or costumes, or lines from the show that resonate with them.

At a recent staging of the musical "Million Dollar Baby," even a few cast members were tweeting from backstage.

IN THE NEWS: NEW VIDEO FORMAT TO SAVE BANDWIDTH

GENEVA (AP) - A new video format could be coming your way.

The U.N. telecommunications agency has OK'ed a new compression format that could dramatically cut the amount of Internet bandwidth currently used by video files.

The International Telecommunication Union says the format, or codec, known as H.265 would require just half the amount of data needed by its predecessor, H.264.

The H.264 format is widely used for mobile devices, like the iPad, and accounts for two-fifths of web traffic.

The ITU says the new format could lead to faster movie downloads and higher-quality video streaming.
