Officer involved shooting in South Louisiana

SAINT MARY PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Louisiana State Police are looking into an officer involved shooting.

Troopers say 48-year-old Wilbert Thibodeaux is the culprit behind the crime in Saint Mary Parish. He's in custody with charges pending.

State police say three officers were shot and one died in the Town of Charenton. Troopers say officers responded to a house fire but then an armed man began firing a gun. The two injured officers remain in the hospital as of Saturday night.

"Something of this magnitude does not get any easier, not just for the police officers involved, but for the community," a Louisiana State Trooper said. "In a situation like this, we're going to have other officers come out to assist these agencies in a time of grief."

Once extinguished, investigators say they found the body of 78-year-old Eddie Lyons of Charenton in the home. Detectives suspect Lyons was shot by Thibodeaux before the fire.
