UPDATE; West Monroe fire caused by a toaster oven

Posted: Updated:

WEST MONROE, LA. (KNOE 8 News) - The cause of the fire that killed two young girls was a toaster oven, according to the Ouachita Parish Fire Department.

This afternoon a representative of the fire department told KNOE 8 News reporter Jillian Corder that they believe the fire occurred after paper was stuffed into the toaster oven.

However, at this time foul play is not suspected, according to the OPFD spokesman. They are ruling the fire accidental.

If you would like to make a donation to the family, you can contact Katrina Chilton at the Civic Center at (318) 329-3312 or (318) 329-2225. Monetary donations can be made at the Chase Bank branch at the corner of North 7th and Cypress Street in West Monroe under the name Susan McMurry.

Ouachita Parish fire investigators tell KNOE 8 News that a cause still has not been confirmed. They say they are waiting for the State Fire Marshal's office to investigate the burnt home on Friday.

The State Fire Marshal's office will be bringing in K-9 units trained to sniff out ignitable liquids.

Ouachita Parish fire investigators say the State Fire Marshal's visit is standard procedure any time there is a death related to a fire.
